Why surface changes everything: the Speed Index guide
Not all courts are equal. Our Speed Index objectively measures each tournament’s pace and its impact on player results.
The problem: not all surfaces are equal
Everyone knows tennis is played on three surfaces: hard, clay and grass. What most bettors miss is that pace varies enormously within a single surface.
A match on the fast hard of Bercy has nothing to do with the slow hard of Indian Wells. Yet the odds do not always reflect that nuance — and that is where the value is.
The Speed Index: measuring what the eye cannot see
The Speed Index is a 0-100 score that MatchUp Tennis computes for every ATP tournament. It is built on aggregated serve statistics: ace percentage, first-serve points won and service points won.
The higher the Speed Index, the faster the court and the more the server is favored.
Exemples concrets
Courts lents (SI 20-35) : Roland Garros (27), Buenos Aires, Marrakech. Topspin and endurance rule. Rallies are long, Big Servers lose their edge.
Courts moyens (SI 35-55) : Indian Wells (39), Miami (47), Australian Open (56). A balance between serve and return. Versatile players excel.
Courts rapides (SI 55-70+) : Cincinnati (63), Wimbledon (65), some indoor events. The serve calls the shots. Big Servers thrive, defenders struggle.
Impact on players: the numbers speak
Our database of 120,000+ matches shows massive performance gaps depending on court pace. The same player can post a 70% win rate on fast courts and 45% on slow ones.
The Big Servers see their win rate drop 10-15 points on slow courts versus fast. The Terriens Offensifs show the opposite pattern: they win 15-20% more on slow courts.
Before betting, check the tournament’s Speed Index on the Tournaments page. If a Big Server is playing on a court at SI 25, his odds are probably too short. If a Clay-Court Specialist is on fast at SI 65+, watch out for the trap.
Why odds do not reflect the surface
Sportsbooks adjust odds mainly on ATP ranking and recent form. They factor in the surface at a basic level (Hard/Clay/Grass) but do not distinguish fast hard from slow hard.
That is our edge: the Speed Index combined with playing-style performance profiles by court pace lets us detect situations where the market underrates the surface effect.
Speed Index and playing styles: the winning combination
The real power of the Speed Index is how it interacts with playing styles. Each style has its performance profile by pace: Big Servers dominate above SI 55, Counter Punchers excel between 35-50, Clay-Court Specialists rule below 35.
When a style matchup is played on a court that favors one of the two, the edge multiplies. And that is exactly what our hybrid model capture.
