How to read tennis odds and find value
A full guide to understanding tennis betting odds, computing implied probability and identifying value betting situations.
Odds: what they really say
Odds are not a prediction — they are a probability dressed up as a number. When a sportsbook shows Sinner at 1.40, it is implicitly saying: “Sinner has a ~71% chance of winning”. Understanding that conversion is the basis of everything.
The magic formula
To convert decimal odds into a probability: Probability = 1 ÷ Odds × 100. Exemples concrets :
- Odds 1.50 → 1 ÷ 1.50 = 66.7% implied probability
- Odds 2.00 → 1 ÷ 2.00 = 50% — the match is rated 50/50
- Odds 3.50 → 1 ÷ 3.50 = 28.6% — outsider clair
- Odds 5.00 → 1 ÷ 5.00 = 20% — a win considered unlikely
The sportsbook margin
If you add up both players’ implied probabilities, you will always get more than 100%. The difference is the sportsbook’s margin — its guaranteed profit.
Example: Player A at 1.60 (62.5%) + Player B at 2.50 (40%) = 102.5%. The margin is 2.5%. In tennis it ranges from 2% to 8% depending on the book and the match.
Always look for the sportsbooks with the thinnest margins. On the same match, odds can range from 1.80 to 1.95 depending on the book. Use an odds comparison tool — those cents make all the difference over time.
What is “value”?
Value is when the true probability of an outcome is higher than what the odds imply. If your model puts Sinner at 75% and the odds imply only 65%, you have a 10% edge.
That is exactly what MatchUp Tennis does: our v4.0 hybrid model computes an independent probability from playing styles, Elo by surface, form and fatigue. When that probability differs significantly from the market’s, you have value.
The math of value
The expected value formula: EV = (Probability × Odds) - 1. If EV is positive, you have a positive-value bet. Examples:
- Probability 60%, odds 2.00 → EV = (0.60 × 2.00) - 1 = +0.20 → Value ✓
- Probability 60%, odds 1.50 → EV = (0.60 × 1.50) - 1 = -0.10 → No value ✗
- Probability 40%, odds 3.00 → EV = (0.40 × 3.00) - 1 = +0.20 → Value ✓
Why value is more common in tennis
Tennis is a sport de matchups. Unlike soccer where teams field 11 players, tennis is one against one. The opponent’s playing style directly shapes the result. Sportsbooks adjust mainly on ATP ranking and recent form — they do not always capture playing-style matchup dynamics.
That is our edge. Our track record proves it: +42.5% ROI over 256 signals between December 2024 and March 2026. Results are viewable in real time on our page Track Record.
Mistakes to avoid
- Betting on your favorite player — Emotional bias is the value bettor’s enemy number one
- Ignoring the surface — A favorite on hard can be an underdog on clay. Check the Speed Index
- Trop de paris — Discipline matters more than volume. One STRONG VALUE signal a week beats 10 SLIGHT EDGE
- Not comparing odds — The difference between 1.80 and 1.95 over 100 bets = several units of profit
